Rupee Declines Amid Middle East Tensions and Crude Oil Surge; Volatility Remains Contained

₹ - $ June 23, 2025

The Indian Rupee declined by 17 paise to 86.72 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday, reacting to a sharp rise in global crude oil prices following the US military's strike on three nuclear facilities in Iran. Forex traders attributed the pressure on the domestic currency to a strengthening US dollar and weak sentiment in domestic equity markets. Brent crude rose nearly 2% to $77.27 per barrel, while the dollar index was up 0.31% at 99.01. Despite this, rising foreign institutional inflows and an increase in India’s forex reserves helped limit further losses. At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 86.75 before recovering slightly. Analysts noted that markets are closely watching potential retaliation by Iran, particularly concerns around the Gulf of Hormuz, a key oil transit route. However, the broader market reaction was muted, with volatility measures remaining near average levels. Crude oil briefly spiked to $81.4 but later pared gains, indicating that fears of wider escalation may be easing. Meanwhile, domestic equity markets rebounded sharply later in the day, with the Nifty 50 reclaiming the 25,000 mark. The Reserve Bank of India is expected to continue monitoring the situation and intervene if needed to maintain currency stability.Disclaimer: This article is for informational purposes only.
