Energy & Currency Market Update – 18 January 2026 Market trends remained mixed this week as crude held steady, the currency market stayed under pressure, and natural gas showed a short-term rebound. Crude Oil: Crude closed at 63.77, marginally lower by 0.06% compared to last week’s 63.81. On a monthly basis, crude is up 6.60%, while the quarterly trend remains positive with a 4.05% gain. However, crude is still down 21.07% year-on-year from 80.79. The yearly low stands at 58.92 recorded on 16/12/25, and current levels are 8.23% above that bottom. Crude’s yearly high was 80.79 on 19/01/25, indicating a major correction over the year. USD INR: The exchange rate closed at 90.70, falling 0.51% from last week’s 90.24. Monthly and quarterly changes also remained negative at 0.49% and 3.07%, respectively. Yearly performance shows a decline of 4.77% compared to 86.57. The yearly high was 84.29 on 05/05/25, reflecting a 7.60% change, while the yearly low of 90.94 occurred on 16/12/25, with current levels showing a minor recovery of 0.26%. Natural Gas: Natural gas closed at 3.46, rising 6.46% from last week’s 3.25. Despite the weekly gain, prices are still down 11.28% monthly. The quarterly movement remains strong with a 15.33% increase. On a yearly basis, gas is down 12.18% from 3.94, though it remains 25.82% above the yearly low of 2.75 recorded on 24/08/25. Natural gas is still well below the yearly high of 5.28 seen on 05/12/25, reflecting a drop of 34.47% from the peak.
