The Government of India has notified the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2026 to strengthen sustainability measures across the country. The new rules came into effect on March 31, 2026, under the Environment Protection Act, 1986. A key highlight is the mandatory use of recycled plastic in packaging, with targets rising to 60% by 2028-29 for certain categories. The amendment also promotes “end-of-life disposal” methods such as waste-to-energy and co-processing in industries.Producers, importers, and brand owners are now required to meet strict recycling and reuse obligations. Local bodies, gram panchayats, and district authorities have been empowered to enforce plastic waste rules more effectively.State governments will form monitoring committees to ensure proper implementation and compliance. The rules also introduce stricter labeling standards for recycled plastic materials. Flexibility has been provided to carry forward unfulfilled recycling targets for up to three years under certain conditions.
