Indian Rupee Hits Record Low as USD Strengthens Ahead of Fed Rate Decision

₹ - $ November 7, 2024

The Indian Rupee (INR) extended its decline on Thursday, reaching an all-time low of 84.2950 against the US Dollar (USD). The dollar's rally, buoyed by expectations of growth-oriented policies in the United States, has driven demand for the greenback, putting pressure on Asian currencies, including the rupee. Higher U.S. bond yields and continued foreign fund outflows from Indian markets have also contributed to the rupee’s fall. The recent victory of Donald Trump in the U.S. presidential election has further bolstered the dollar, as investors anticipate that tax cuts and deregulation will support U.S. economic growth. The strengthening of the dollar, coupled with the possibility of increased tariffs, is adding to the downward pressure on emerging market currencies. Despite a slight dip in the dollar index to 104.9, the USD remains strong against most major currencies, which has implications for India’s exchange rate stability. Foreign investors have sold over $1.5 billion worth of Indian equities in November so far, adding to the $11 billion in outflows seen in October. These outflows have weighed on Indian equity markets, with key indices Sensex and Nifty 50 both trading down by about 0.5% on Thursday. The outflow of funds, alongside weakening stock markets, continues to apply pressure on the rupee. In anticipation of potential volatility, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has been actively intervening in the foreign exchange market by selling dollars to curb excessive depreciation of the rupee. This intervention has helped keep the USD/INR within a range of 83.80 to 84.35, although the rupee’s implied volatility has remained relatively low compared to other regional currencies. The RBI is expected to continue this strategy to maintain stability, though there is a likelihood that the rupee’s value may gradually be allowed to drift higher, with a possible near-term cap around 84.40. The focus now shifts to the U.S. Federal Reserve's interest rate decision, due on Thursday, with markets widely expecting a 25 basis point rate cut. Investors are also eager for any signals from the Fed on the future direction of U.S. monetary policy. Any change in interest rates or guidance on future cuts could further influence the USD/INR pair, as traders monitor the Fed’s stance closely. India’s economic data has shown resilience, with a strong performance in the services sector recently. However, high inflation remains a concern, as it could intensify depreciation pressures on the rupee. The RBI's approach to handling inflation and exchange rate stability will be crucial in determining the rupee's trajectory in the coming months. As global markets await the Fed’s decision, the rupee's future movements will largely depend on both the Fed’s policy direction and the RBI’s intervention strategy. The next few days will be critical in determining whether the rupee can find support or if it will face additional depreciation pressures amidst a strong dollar environment.
