OPEC+ announces production cuts, causing crude oil prices to rise sharply

Crude oil April 3, 2023

OPEC+ surprised the market with an announcement of a production cut of 1.16 million barrels a day. Saudi Arabia led the way by pledging to reduce its supply by 500,000 barrels a day, and Russia confirmed that their previously implemented production cut would continue until the end of 2023. Brent crude prices rose 5.45%, hitting $84.18 from the previous close of $79.83 per barrel. This move is significant because, despite recent price fluctuations, the market was previously tight for the latter part of the year. The announcement contradicts previous assurances from OPEC+ that they would maintain supply levels, and has caused crude oil prices to rise sharply, with some analysts predicting that it could reach $100 per barrel. The cuts will start next month and could result in a deficit in worldwide supply-demand balances earlier than expected. Japan has also broken away from US-led efforts to impose a $60 per barrel cap on purchases of Russian seaborne crude oil, instead purchasing Russian crude oil above this cap to ensure access to energy from Moscow. The initial impact of the cuts, starting next month, will result in a reduction of about 1.1 million barrels a day. From July, due to the extension of Russia’s existing supply reduction, there will be about 1.6 million barrels a day less crude on the market than previously expected.
