Government notifies the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, prohibiting identified single use plastic items by 2022.

The Indian government has taken measures to reduce plastic pollution by implementing the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021. These rules ban the use of certain single-use plastics, including polystyrene, that have a high potential for littering and low utility. The ban will take effect on July 1, 2022 and will apply to the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale, and use of the following items: ear buds, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene decorations, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery, straws, trays, packaging films, invitation cards, cigarette packets, thin plastic banners, and stirrers. In order to combat littering from lightweight plastic carry bags, the thickness of these bags has been increased. The minimum thickness was raised from 50 microns to 75 microns on September 30, 2021 and will be raised again to 120 microns on December 31, 2022. This is meant to encourage reuse of the bags and reduce litter. India has committed to addressing the global problem of single-use plastic pollution and was a leader in the adoption of a resolution on this issue at the 4th United Nations Environment Assembly in 2019. The Government has also been taking measures for awareness generation towards elimination of single use plastics and effective implementation of Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.  A two-month long Awareness Campaign of Single Use Plastic 2021 has been organized. The Ministry has also organized pan India essay writing competition on the theme for spreading awareness amongst school students in the country.
