Polymer Market Experiences Major Price Changes in Relation to Crude Oil Trends

Date – 06/02/2023 The prices of Polymers have experienced significant variations in the recent months, as indicated by the latest market data. At the beginning of November 2022, polypropylene (PP) was priced at $1,000 per unit, and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was priced at $1,220. However, just a week later, on November 10th, the price of PP had declined to $950, and LDPE had dropped to $1,140. This was a result of the sharp fall in Crude prices that occurred on November 4th, 2022. In December, the prices started to recover, with PP reaching $990 on December 15th and LDPE priced at $1,090. The trend of rising prices continued in January, with PP hitting $1,120 on February 2nd, 2023, and LDPE reaching $1,180. This was due to the crude prices recovering to some extent around December 9th, 2022. Similar fluctuations were also evident in the prices of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) during the same period. The recent recovery in the oil industry can be attributed to two major factors. Firstly, Beijing has relaxed its stringent Covid-19 guidelines by easing testing requirements and travel restrictions. This has allowed individuals with mild or no symptoms of Covid-19 to isolate at home instead of undergoing treatment in central facilities. Secondly, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has revised its forecast for oil demand growth for both the current year and the next, as a result of the surprising increase in oil consumption in China, India, and the Middle East in recent weeks.
