India’s import PP, PE markets rebound in Jan after several months of declines.

Polymer March 22, 2023

Date – 26/01/2023 The prices of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) in India have increased from the previous month due to a shortage in supply. This has led to a situation where demand exceeds the available supply, causing prices to rise. Despite resistance from buyers, the trend is expected to continue in the near future due to a relaxing of COVID restrictions in China and potential infrastructure improvements outlined in the upcoming Indian budget. A Mumbai-based polyolefin trader reported that supplies of polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) in the Indian market are becoming scarce, echoing the trend seen in other Asian markets. With the easing of COVID restrictions in China, the demand for polyolefins is growing, reducing the available supply to Asian markets and putting pressure on supplies from the Middle East. This shortage is contributing to higher import prices in India. Additionally, the upcoming Indian budget, expected in February, is predicted to allocate additional funds for rural infrastructure projects, which would also positively impact the polymer market. Indian economists and analysts predict that the focus of the upcoming 2023 Union Budget will be on infrastructure and rural development. It is estimated that spending on agriculture and rural growth will increase by approximately 15% from the previous fiscal year, amounting to an additional US$10 billion. This increased funding will likely be directed towards projects such as rural roads, housing, and irrigation infrastructure, among others. “All this points to a better year ahead for PP, PE and PVC,” the sources said.
